How the Studio Works

Small Team, Serious Work

We run a deliberately small number of engagements so that the people who sold the work are the people who do the work.

There is no delivery layer here. No account manager translating between you and the client, no offshore team producing the parts nobody wants to build. If you are on a project, you are in the client call, you see the analytics, and you know what number your work is supposed to move. That is the deal, and it is not for everyone.

We are fully remote across five time zones, with four hours of daily overlap that everyone protects. Most communication is written. Meetings need an agenda and a decision to make, or they get cancelled. We ship on weekdays and we do not ship on Fridays.

The Shape of a WeekTypical

Monday · one planning call

Forty-five minutes. What shipped, what is blocked, what the number did.

Tuesday to Thursday · build

Long uninterrupted blocks. No standing meetings. Async review on pull requests and design files.

Thursday · client demo

Real work on a live staging URL. You present your own work. Nobody presents it for you.

Friday · craft time

No deploys, no client calls. Refactors, prototypes, writing, and the work that makes the next project faster.

Operating Principles

What We Actually Argue About

These are not wall posters. They are the criteria we use in reviews and in hiring.

Every screen defends a number

Taste matters, and taste that cannot explain itself against a metric loses the argument. Bring the reasoning, not just the file.

Finished beats clever

A shipped, accessible, fast, boring solution outranks an elegant one that needs another sprint. We optimize for what is live.

Say the hard thing early

If an estimate is wrong, a direction is failing, or a client is asking for the wrong thing, that gets raised in week one, not week nine.

Own the whole seam

Designers read the analytics. Engineers read the brief. Strategists open the repository. Nobody gets to stop at the edge of their discipline.

Write it down

Decisions live in documents, not in someone’s memory of a call. If it is not written, it did not happen and it will be relitigated.

Leave it better than the brief

The scope is the floor. The engagements we are proudest of all contained something nobody asked for and everybody kept.

What Roles Look Like

Scope, Not Titles

We hire against responsibility. The label on the offer letter is the least interesting part of it.

Design

Senior and above

You own an engagement’s visual and interaction system end to end — positioning through production. You present to the client yourself, you defend decisions against conversion data, and you build systems other people can extend. Portfolio depth matters more than years.

Engineering

Senior and staff

Production front end on modern React and edge infrastructure, plus the integration surface: CMS, CRM, analytics, payments. You are expected to argue about performance budgets and to say no to architecture that the client’s own team could not maintain.

Growth

Strategist and lead

You own the client outcome. That means the measurement plan, the experiment roadmap, the monthly review call, and the uncomfortable conversation when a test fails. Comfort with spreadsheets, attribution models, and being wrong in public is required.

Motion & 3D

Specialist

You author the sensory language: transitions, scroll choreography, WebGL scenes that hold a performance budget on a mid-range Android. Craft here is judged on restraint as much as ambition.

We do not run a rolling job board. When a seat opens it is posted above and filled quickly. If nothing matches today, send your work anyway — roughly half our hires came from an introduction made months before the role existed.

Hiring Process

Four Conversations, About Two Weeks

No take-home marathons, no whiteboard trivia, no panel of nine.

Introduction

Thirty minutes with a founder. What you have built, what you want next, and what we actually do all day. You get honest answers about scope and compensation range on this call.

Work review

Ninety minutes walking through two projects you shipped, in your own words. We want the constraints, the trade-offs, and the parts that failed. Bring the messy version.

Paid exercise

A scoped, realistic problem — four to six hours, paid at your rate. We review it together on a call. You keep the work and the fee regardless of the outcome.

Team and decision

A conversation with two people you would work beside daily, then a decision within three business days. Every candidate who reaches this stage gets written feedback.

To apply, send your work and a short note about what you want to be doing in two years through the contact form. Put the role in the subject line. A person reads every submission and replies within five business days.

Benefits

What Comes With the Seat

Remote without asterisks

Work from anywhere inside a four-hour overlap window. No mandated office days, no core-hours theater, no tracking software.

Compensation stated up front

The range is on the first call. We benchmark annually against senior product roles, not against agency salary bands, and we do not negotiate against a candidate’s current pay.

Profit participation

Everyone past their first year shares in studio profit on a published formula. It is not a discretionary bonus and it is not a lottery ticket.

Real time off

A minimum, not a maximum — and it is enforced. Project schedules assume it. Coverage is planned before the calendar invite goes out.

Craft budget

An annual allowance for hardware, software, conferences, and courses, with no approval chain. Friday craft time is protected on top of it.

Health and equipment

Health coverage or a regional equivalent stipend, a full home-office setup, and a machine that can render what you build without waiting.

Candidate FAQ

The Things People Ask

Rarely, and honestly. Our model puts every person directly in front of clients from week one, which is a hard place to learn the fundamentals. When we do hire early-career, it is into a defined apprenticeship with a named mentor and a reduced client load, and we say so in the posting.

Anywhere you can share four hours with the rest of the team and be employed or contracted legally. We handle contractor arrangements in most countries and full employment in a smaller set. We will tell you which applies before the second conversation.

Yes, at your stated rate, invoiced normally, whether or not we make an offer. It is scoped to four to six hours and it is never work we would otherwise bill a client for.

More than at most studios. Everyone joins the weekly demo and presents their own work. If you want to build in isolation and hand off to an account team, this is the wrong place, and we would rather you know that now.

Yes. Tell us what you would own and why it belongs here. Speculative introductions have turned into roles more than once, usually a quarter or two later.

For specialist work, yes — motion, 3D, illustration, and occasional deep backend. Same standards, same client exposure, same review process. Send work through the contact form and note that you are freelance.
